World War I began in 1914. It was a global war that involved many of the world's major powers, organized into two opposing military alliances. The two opposing alliances were the Allies, consisting of countries such as France, the United Kingdom, and Russia, and the Central Powers, consisting of countries such as Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire.
