Gregory Lee Johnson was convicted in Texas for burning an American flag in 1989. Johnson was a member of the Revolutionary Communist Youth Brigade and was protesting the Reagan administration's policies in front of the Dallas City Hall when he set fire to an American flag. His conviction was overturned by the Supreme Court in 1989 in the landmark case Texas v. Johnson, which established that burning the American flag was protected under the First Amendment.

Johnson burned the flag to protest the policies of President Ronald Reagan. He was arrested and charged with violating a Texas statute that prevented the desecration of a venerated object, including the American flag, if such action were likely to incite anger in others.
