Hanukkah, also known as the "Festival of Lights," lasts for eight nights. It begins on the 25th day of the Jewish month of Kislev and continues until the 2nd day of Tevet. It is celebrated to commemorate the Jewish victory over the Greeks and the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem. Each night of Hanukkah, a candle is lit on a special Hanukkah menorah, or hanukkiah, adding one candle each night until all eight are lit on the final night. Hanukkah is a joyous time for Jewish families, filled with games, gifts, and traditional foods such as latkes (potato pancakes) and sufganiyot (jelly-filled donuts).
