The Sea of Tranquility, also known as Mare Tranquillitatis, is a lunar mare or a dark plain on the surface of the moon. It is located within the Tranquillitatis basin, which is a large impact crater on the near side of the moon. The Sea of Tranquility gained significant historical importance as it was the site of the first manned moon landing of NASA's Apollo 11 mission in July 1969.
