Ernesto "Che" Guevara was born on June 14, 1928, in Rosario, Argentina. He was the eldest of five children in a middle-class family of Spanish-Irish descent. Guevara began his education at home, where he was taught by his mother Celia. He entered the University of Buenos Aires to study medicine in 1948.
In 1952, Guevara graduated from medical school and embarked on a series of journeys in Latin America and Africa. During these travels, he became exposed to the social injustice and political upheaval that characterized many of the countries he visited.
