The movie Dreamgirls is purportedly based on the musical group The Supremes. While the characters and storylines in the movie are fictional, they were heavily inspired by the experiences of The Supremes, a prominent Motown group from the 1960s. The character Deena Jones, played by Beyoncé in the film, was specifically inspired by Diana Ross, the lead singer of The Supremes who went on to have a successful solo career.
