The plotters of the Gunpowder Plot in 1605 aimed to assassinate King James I of England. They had planned to blow up the Houses of Parliament during the State Opening on November 5th, killing the king and members of parliament. The plot was discovered when one of the conspirators, Guy Fawkes, was found guarding the explosives. The failed assassination attempt resulted in harsh punishment for the plotters and further persecution of Catholics in England. Today, November 5th is celebrated as Guy Fawkes Night or Bonfire Night in England.

In 1605, plotters, a group of Catholic conspirators, including Guy Fawkes, devised a plan to blow up the Houses of Parliament. Their aim was to overthrow the government, kill King James I, and make James's daughter, a Catholic head of state.

But the Gunpowder Plot was a failed attempt to assassinate King James I of England. The Plan was organised by Robert Catesby, a devout English Catholic who hoped to kill the Protestant King James and establish Catholic rule in England.
