Hippopotamuses can stay underwater for up to five minutes at a time. They have special adaptations that allow them to hold their breath for long periods of time, such as closed nostrils and a membrane that covers their eyes. This ability is crucial for their survival, as they spend much of their time in water to regulate their body temperature and avoid predators.
