The painting that was stolen from the Louvre by museum employee Vincenzo Peruggia was the Mona Lisa. The theft of the Mona Lisa occurred in 1911, when Peruggia stole the painting from the Louvre in Paris. He kept the painting hidden for two years before attempting to sell it, at which point he was arrested and the painting was returned to the museum.
