The wife of Orpheus in Greek legend was Eurydice. She was a nymph who married Orpheus, a talented musician and singer. In the myth, Eurydice dies from a snake bite on her wedding day, and Orpheus travels to the underworld to try to bring her back. Hades, the god of the underworld, agrees to let Eurydice return to the living world, but Orpheus must walk in front of her and not look back until they have both left the underworld. Unfortunately, Orpheus looks back too soon and Eurydice is lost forever. The tragic story of Orpheus and Eurydice has been memorialized in art and literature for centuries.
