Dogs generally have four toes on their front paws and four toes on their back paws, for a total of 16 toes. However, some dogs may have an additional toe, known as a dewclaw, on their front or back paws. Dewclaws are located higher up on the leg and do not touch the ground when the dog is standing or walking. Some breeds are known for having dewclaws, while others may have them removed shortly after birth for safety or cosmetic reasons.
