Okapis are usually solitary animals and are active mainly during the day. They are very secretive and elusive, often avoiding human contact. They are also known to mark their territory by leaving a tar-like scent behind them as they move through the forest.

Okapis are generally shy and elusive, spending much of their time browsing for leaves, fruit, and other vegetation in the forest understory. They are diurnal and typically live in small family groups led by a dominant female. They use infrasonic sounds and scent marking to communicate with one another and avoid predators.
