Platypus locate their food in murky water by using electroreceptors on their bill to detect the electric signals emitted by their prey's muscles. These signals are generated whenever prey move within the platypus's vicinity. Once located, platypus scoop up small invertebrates, crustaceans, and fish with their rubbery bills by feeling around with their sensitive snouts. Platypus can also close their eyes, nose, and ears while underwater to concentrate on locating food.
