I am weighing a move and safety is a primary concern. Would anyone be willing to offer insights into the relative safety of Newark and Hoboken, particularly regarding violent and property crime?

Hoboken is generally considered safer than Newark. Newark is a larger city with some safe neighborhoods but overall the crime rate is higher compared to Hoboken.

Hoboken has a lower violent crime rate and is a small, well patrolled city with many young professionals and family's.

Many people considered Hoboken the safer option because of better walkability, lower crime statistics and proximity  to Manhattan.

Statistically, Hoboken is significantly safer than Newark. Crime rates in Hoboken, covering both violent and property crimes, are consistently much lower and often sit below the national average.

The situation in Newark is more nuanced. While its city-wide crime rates are considerably higher, safety can vary greatly depending on the neighborhood. Some areas, like the Ironbound or Forest Hill, are generally viewed as much safer than other parts of the city. Newark has also made progress in reducing crime over the years, but based on overall data, Hoboken remains the safer choice.
