The smallest bird in the world is the Bee Hummingbird (Mellisuga helenae). It is also known as the Helena hummingbird or the zunzuncito. This tiny bird is endemic to Cuba and measures about 5 to 6 centimeters (2 to 2.4 inches) in length. The Bee Hummingbird weighs only about 1.6 to 2.6 grams (0.056 to 0.092 ounces), making it one of the lightest bird species as well.
The male Bee Hummingbirds have iridescent feathers, with the throat and head displaying vibrant shades of fiery red, pink, and purple. The female Bee Hummingbirds, on the other hand, have a more muted appearance with greenish feathers.
Due to their small size, Bee Hummingbirds are extremely agile fliers and can hover in mid-air while feeding on nectar from flowers. Their rapid wing movements allow them to beat their wings up to 80 times per second, enabling them to maintain a stationary position in the air.
