The Simpsons first debuted as a short on the American variety television show, The Tracey Ullman Show, on April 19, 1987. The shorts were originally intended to be filler material between sketches, but they quickly became popular with viewers. The Simpson family, including Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie, were designed by cartoonist Matt Groening, and the show eventually grew into its own series, which premiered on December 17, 1989. The Simpsons is now the longest-running American scripted primetime television series in history, with over 700 episodes and counting.
