The first country to use electricity for lighting on a large scale was Britain. In the 1870s, electrical power started to be generated and used for street lighting and in homes and businesses. But many other countries quickly followed suit and by the early 20th century, most industrialized nations had adopted the use of electricity for a wide variety of purposes.
