Starbucks opened its first store in Seattle, Washington in 1971. The store was located in the historic Pike Place Market and was a small, single storefront that sold only coffee beans and equipment, not brewed coffee. Today, the Pike Place store remains one of the most popular tourist destinations in Seattle, and Starbucks has grown to become the largest coffeehouse chain in the world with more than 31,000 locations in 80 countries.
