The highest spiritual leader of Tibet is traditionally recognized as the Dalai Lama. The current and 14th Dalai Lama is Tenzin Gyatso, who has been in exile in India since 1959 following the Chinese occupation of Tibet. The Dalai Lama is considered to be the spiritual head of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism, as well as the political leader of the Central Tibetan Administration, which is also known as the Tibetan government-in-exile.
