Fidel Castro succeeded Fulgencio Batista as the political leader of Cuba in 1959. Batista had been the leader of Cuba since 1952.

Fulgencio Batista was a Cuban military leader and politician who served as the President of Cuba from 1940 to 1944, and again from 1952 to 1959. During his second term, he faced increasing opposition from Fidel Castro's revolutionary forces. In 1959, Batista was overthrown by Castro's forces and fled the country.
