Gin was originally created in the 17th century in the Netherlands as a medicine to treat stomach ailments and other diseases. It was specifically used to treat soldiers during the Thirty Years' War as a way to prevent malaria. However, it was not until the English came across gin in the Netherlands that the spirit gained popularity as a recreational drink. The Dutch term for juniper, the main ingredient in gin, is "jenever," which eventually became "gin" to the English who began importing it.
