Gin originated as a medicinal liquor made by monks and alchemists across Europe, particularly in Salerno, Italy, by the Schola Medica Salernitana. The modern Gin was then modified in the Flanders and the Netherlands, to provide aqua vita from distillates of grapes and grains.

The original purpose of gin was as a medicinal tonic. Gin was first developed in the Netherlands in the 17th century as a way to extract the medicinal properties of juniper berries. It was then popularized by the British, who used it to treat a variety of ailments, including digestive problems and fever.

Gin was originally created in the 17th century in the Netherlands as a medicine to treat stomach ailments and other diseases. It was specifically used to treat soldiers during the Thirty Years' War as a way to prevent malaria. However, it was not until the English came across gin in the Netherlands that the spirit gained popularity as a recreational drink. The Dutch term for juniper, the main ingredient in gin, is "jenever," which eventually became "gin" to the English who began importing it.
