The Hindenburg disaster involved a German airship known as the Hindenburg. The Hindenburg was a large rigid airship or zeppelin that was operated by the German Zeppelin Airship Company (Deutsche Zeppelin-Reederei). It was one of the most famous and largest airships ever built, measuring about 804 feet (245 meters) in length. On May 6, 1937, while attempting to land at the Naval Air Station Lakehurst in New Jersey, the Hindenburg caught fire and was completely destroyed, resulting in the loss of many lives and marking the end of the era of commercial airship travel.
