General Francisco Franco was the dictator of Spain from 1939 to 1975. He came to power after leading a rebellion against the democratically-elected government, and ultimately established a fascist regime. Under Franco's rule, political opposition was suppressed, and he was known for his strict control over the media, education system, and religious institutions. Despite international isolation, Franco maintained his grip on power until his death in 1975, when Spain transitioned to a parliamentary democracy.
