The Suez Canal was built by Ferdinand de Lesseps, a French diplomat and engineer. The canal, completed in 1869, connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea, allowing quicker access to Asia from Europe. The project was considered a great engineering feat of the 19th century.
