In classical mythology, there were nine muses. They were the daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne, and they were the personification of knowledge and the arts. The muses were Calliope (epic poetry), Clio (history), Erato (lyric poetry), Euterpe (music), Melpomene (tragedy), Polyhymnia (hymns), Terpsichore (dance), Thalia (comedy), and Urania (astronomy).
