The Greek equivalent of the god Mercury is Hermes. He was the messenger of the gods, the patron of travelers, merchants, thieves, and was also associated with trickery and commerce. Like Mercury, he wore winged sandals and a winged cap, carried a caduceus, and could move swiftly and freely between the mortal and divine worlds. He was also known for his role as a guide and protector of the souls of the dead on their journey to the afterlife.
