Erathosthenes, a Greek mathematician, astronomer, and geographer calculated the circumference of the earth during the 3rd century BC. He used the angle of the shadows cast by the sun on two different locations at the same time on the summer solstice to determine the circumference of the earth. His calculations were only off by a few hundred miles from the modern-day measurements.

In the 3rd Century BC, the Ancient Greek mathematician and geographer Eratosthenes calculated the circumference of the earth with considerable accuracy. He used the angle of the sun's rays in two different cities to measure the distance between them and then used the distance to calculate the circumference of the earth. His calculation was remarkably accurate, with an error of only about 15%.
