James Watt laid down the foundation of the first law of thermodynamics. 'Conservation of energy' is the first law of thermodynamics. This law states the total energy of an isolated system is constant, and can be transformed from one form to another; but can neither be created nor destroyed.

The law of thermodynamics is credited to two scientists, Rudolf Clausius and William Thomson (Lord Kelvin). They both developed the concept of energy and formulated the laws of thermodynamics, which describe the behavior of energy and its transformation from one form to another.
