Gecko lizards protect themselves in several ways:
1. Camouflage: Many gecko species have evolved to blend in with their environment. Their skin color and texture mimic the surrounding area, making it difficult for predators to spot them.
2. Escape tactics: Geckos have the ability to detach their tail as a defense mechanism. When threatened, the lizard can shed its tail and run away. The tail continues to wiggle, distracting the predator and giving the gecko time to escape.
3. Sticky feet: Many gecko species have unique toe pads covered in small, sticky hairs that let them cling to surfaces. This helps them climb to safety or escape predators.
4. Poisonous skin: Some gecko species, such as the tokay gecko, secrete a sticky, toxic substance from their skin to deter predators.
5. Night vision: Nocturnal gecko species have evolved excellent night vision, allowing them to see predators in the dark. This gives them a better chance to escape or hide.
