The first paper money in the United States was issued by the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1690 to finance military operations against the French. The bills were denominated in pounds, shillings, and pence and were redeemable for gold or silver coins. However, it was the Continental Congress that issued the first nationally-authorized paper currency, known as "Continental Currency," during the American Revolutionary War.
