The world's first modern bank, as we understand it today, was established in Italy. The Bank of San Giorgio was founded in Genoa in 1407.

The world's first stock exchange was established in Amsterdam, Netherlands in 1602. It was called the Amsterdam Stock Exchange (now known as Euronext Amsterdam) and was created to trade shares of the Dutch East India Company.
