The first recorded use of metal coins was in Lydia, an ancient kingdom in western Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey), around the 7th century BCE. The coins were made of electrum, a naturally occurring alloy of gold and silver, and were stamped with images to indicate their weight and value. The use of coins in Lydia quickly spread to neighboring regions and eventually became a standard form of currency throughout much of the ancient world.
