Jeff Minnenbraker of the United States is credited as the founder of wheelchair tennis. In 1976, he created a modified version of tennis that could be played by people in wheelchairs, using a smaller court and a lower net. The first wheelchair tennis tournament was held in California in 1977, and the sport has since grown in popularity around the world.

Wheelchair tennis was founded by Brad Parks, a paralyzed tennis player. After his accident, Parks thought he would never play tennis again until he saw a group of junior high students playing with modified wheelchairs. In 1976, Parks and a friend created the first wheelchair tennis tournament in California.
