The Kakapo's closest relative is the Kākā bird, which is also endemic to New Zealand. The Kākā is a highly social and intelligent bird and belongs to the same Strigopidae family as the Kakapo. These birds share many similarities, including their unique parrot-like beaks, omnivorous diet, and strong, curved claws that help them climb trees. However, while the Kākā has become relatively common and adaptable, the Kakapo is critically endangered with only a few hundred individuals left in the wild, making conservation efforts even more important.
