The first Eurovision Song Contest was held in Lugano, Switzerland, on May 24, 1956. The contest was organized by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) in an effort to promote cooperation and cultural exchange among European countries through music. Seven countries participated in the first contest: Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and Switzerland. The winning song was "Refrain" by Swiss singer Lys Assia. The Eurovision Song Contest has since become an annual event and is one of the longest-running television shows in the world.
