When President Alberto Fujimori took office in 1990, he responded to Shining Path with repressive force. His government issued a law in 1991 that gave the rondas a legal status, and from that time, they were officially called Comités de auto defensa ("Committees of Self-Defense").

There were several Presidents of Peru during the Shining Path insurgency, which lasted from 1980 to the late 1990s. The insurgency began during the presidency of Fernando Belaúnde Terry (1980-1985) and continued during the presidencies of Alan García (1985-1990) and Alberto Fujimori (1990-2000).

DURING THE SHINING PATH INSURGENCY IN PERU WHICH BEGAN IN 1980 AND LASTED FOR MANY YEARS THERE WERE DIFFERENT PRESIDENTS WHO HELD THE OFFICE. THE SHINNING PATH WAS A MAOIST GUERRILLA GROUP THAT AIMED TO OVERTHROW THE PERUVIAN GOVERNMENT.
