The President of Guatemala during the Guatemalan Civil War was Efraín Ríos Montt. He came to power in a military coup in 1982 and ruled until 1983 when he was overthrown in another coup. Ríos Montt was a controversial figure and was later found guilty of genocide and crimes against humanity.
