Crack sealing is the only effective treatment for active cracks that contract and expand from season to season.

While crack filling may only last 1 or 2 seasons depending on the activity of the cracks, crack sealing can last up to 8 years or longer and is considered a permanent solution. Active cracks that shrink and extend from season to season can only be treated with crack sealing.

Crack filling which can include block, longitudinal, or diagonal cracks, doesn't move due to the close spacing between the edges. If the pavement isn't showing too much movement, then filling is the recommended technique. Deeper and wider cracks also need filling because it's a more permanent and durable solution. The crack filling equipment needed is also minimal in comparison to sealing a shovel, a tamper, pressurized air, and the patch mix are generally enough to fill holes and cracks. The Crack sealing equipment such as tanks, melt pots, and torches are needed for the job, depending on your level of skill. Sealing involves cleaning out the crack and injecting hot sealant into or above the crack. The purpose is to seal the crack so that water doesn't get into the crack and the subgrade.

Crack filling is a process of filling cracks in asphalt with a hot or cold asphalt-based material. Crack sealing is a process of sealing cracks in asphalt with a rubberized material. Crack filling is typically used to repair larger cracks, while crack sealing is used to repair smaller cracks. Crack filling and crack sealing are both methods used to repair cracks in various surfaces such as pavement or concrete. The main difference lies in the materials used and the level of protection provided.

Crack filling typically involves filling the crack with a flexible filler, often a rubberized asphalt-based material, to prevent water infiltration and further damage.

Crack sealing, on the other hand, involves the application of a specialized sealant that adheres to the crack, creating a more durable and watertight seal, offering better long-term protection.
