When water is frozen, it turns into ice. The process of freezing occurs when the temperature of water reaches its freezing point, which is 32°F (0°C) at standard atmospheric pressure. As the water molecules lose heat energy, they slow down and begin to bond together, forming an organized crystalline structure that we recognize as ice. The solid ice is less dense than the liquid water, which is why ice floats on top of water.
