The two Renaissance artists commissioned to paint rivaling frescoes at the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence were Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci. Michelangelo painted the frescoes on the ceiling of the Salone dei Cinquecento and Leonardo painted the Battle of Anghiari fresco in the Sala del Gran Consiglio.
