The smallest unit of matter is the atom. Atoms are the building blocks of all matter and are composed of protons, neutrons and electrons. Atoms are so small that it would take about 50,000,000 of them lined up side-by-side to span the width of a human hair.

The smallest unit of matter is an atom. It is the basic unit of a chemical element, which cannot be further broken down into smaller particles. Atoms consist of a nucleus, which contains positively charged protons and neutral neutrons, and negatively charged electrons that orbit around the nucleus.
