President Franklin D. Roosevelt made the Presidential Proclamation in 1939 to move Thanksgiving to the second to last Thursday of November. This was done in an effort to extend the holiday shopping season and boost the economy during the Great Depression. The proclamation was met with resistance in some states, and was eventually reversed in 1941.
