Adolf Hitler committed suicide in Berlin, the capital city of Germany, on April 30, 1945, as Allied forces were closing in on the city.

Hitler had been hiding in a bunker underneath the city for several months, and as the situation became increasingly dire, he decided to take his own life rather than be captured by enemy forces.

He shot himself in the head while also biting down on a cyanide capsule.

His body was later taken outside the bunker, doused with gasoline, and set on fire by his aides.
