F.W. de Klerk, the last white president of South Africa, ordered the release of Nelson Mandela from prison.

Mandela had been imprisoned for 27 years for his opposition to the apartheid regime.

De Klerk became president in 1989 and quickly began to implement a series of reforms to dismantle apartheid.

One of his most significant actions was to release Mandela in 1990 and begin negotiations with the African National Congress (ANC) to end apartheid and establish a multiracial democracy in South Africa.

De Klerk and Mandela were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 for their efforts to bring about a peaceful transition to democracy in South Africa.

This historic decision was a key turning point in the struggle against apartheid and paved the way for the negotiated end of apartheid and the establishment of a democratic, non-racial South Africa.
