The agreement was made between the British and Irish governments and eight political parties or groupings from Northern Ireland.

The agreement comprises two elements:

  • a treaty between the two states, signed by the leaders of the two governments; and
  • a more substantial agreement between the eight political parties and the two governments.

The Good Friday Agreement, also known as the Belfast Agreement, was signed on April 10, 1998, by the British and Irish governments and the political parties of Northern Ireland, including Sinn Fein and the Ulster Unionist Party. The Agreement aimed to bring an end to the sectarian violence and political conflict in Northern Ireland, also known as the Troubles, which had plagued the region for decades.
