The square watermelon was developed in Japan. Farmers in Japan started growing them in the 1980s as a way to save space in small Japanese refrigerators. Today, square watermelons are grown in other countries as well, but Japan remains the largest producer of this unique fruit.

The square watermelon was developed in Japan in the late 1970s. It was created as a solution to the problem of the fruit taking uptoo much space in refrigerators and being difficult to transport. By growing watermelons in square containers, they could be stacked and packaged more efficiently.
