Kiwis are endemic to New Zealand, which means they are found nowhere else in the world. They inhabit a variety of forested habitats, from the lowland to the high alpine regions, including temperate rainforests, scrublands, and grasslands. Each of the five recognized species of kiwi has its own specific range and habitat preferences. However, all kiwi species are threatened by habitat loss and predation by introduced mammalian predators, such as stoats, rats, and cats.
