One popular beverage that once contained cocaine is Coca-Cola. In its early days, Coca-Cola did indeed contain small amounts of cocaine. The original Coca-Cola recipe, created by John Pemberton in the late 19th century, included coca leaf extract, which naturally contains trace amounts of cocaine. At the time, the medicinal properties of coca leaf and its extracts were believed to provide stimulating and invigorating effects. However, the amount of cocaine in Coca-Cola was extremely minimal and not enough to cause significant psychoactive effects. Over time, the use of cocaine in Coca-Cola was phased out, and by the early 1900s, the company began using "spent" coca leaves, from which the cocaine had been extracted, for flavoring purposes. Today, Coca-Cola no longer contains cocaine and has been completely cocaine-free for many decades.
