Sumatran rhinoceroses typically produce a solitary offspring at a time. They have a comparatively slow reproductive rate in comparison to other rhinoceros species. Following a gestation period of roughly 15 to 16 months, a female Sumatran rhinoceros will generally give birth to a lone calf. The calf is relatively sizable upon arrival, weighing approximately 40 to 60 kilograms (88 to 132 pounds). The mother provides care and safeguarding to her young until it achieves independence, which usually takes multiple years. Because of their limited reproductive rate, the recovery of the Sumatran rhinoceros population from declines is a challenging task, making conservation efforts essential for their survival.
