Julius Nyerere was the first President of Tanzania.
Julius Nyerere was a Tanzanian anti-colonial activist and politician who served as the first President of Tanzania from 1964 to 1985. He was a major figure in the Pan-African movement and played a key role in Tanzania's independence from British colonial rule. Nyerere was known for his socialist policies, including the creation of a system of collective farms known as ujamaa. He was also a prominent advocate for African unity and played a leading role in the formation of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), which later became the African Union.
